This week in Reception we have been having lots of fun. We have been continuing our work on the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and have made our own split pin gingerbread men. We then wrote instructions to help other classes make their gingerbread men.

Making a split pin gingerbread man
1. Cut out the gingerbread man’s body.
2. Cut out the gingerbread man’s arms, legs and head.
3. Get a split pin and put it through a hole on the gingerbread man’s head.
4. Attach the gingerbread man’s body to his head using the split pin.
5. Put his arms and legs onto his body using the split pins.
6. Write your name on the back of the gingerbread man.

In Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy we have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes.

So far, we have learnt that a shape with 6 sides is a hexagon, a shape with 8 sides is an octagon and a shape with 5 sides is called a pentagon.

On Friday, Reception 2 went on a shape walk all around school. We saw lots of different shapes includuing triangles, circles, squares and rectangles. We also found a four-sided shape which wasn't a square or a rectangle. Miss Woodger told us that it was called a quadrilateral... which we all had a go at saying! Some of us even remembered it later on too!

This Week in Reception

This week in Reception we have been doing lots of fun and exciting things.

In Communication, Language and Literacy we have been reading the story of 'Elmer' and we can also put the pictures from the story in the right order to help us retell it.

Continuing on from looking at 'Elmer' we have also been making lots of elephants in many different ways. We have drawn elephants, painted elephants, collaged elephants and even used some of our construction area resources to make an elephant! Some of us made Elmer Day elephants (where all of the elephants paint themselves different colours) as well as grey elephants. We have even painted and collaged two really big Elmers - come inside and see them! We all had great fun making them!

In Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy we have been thinking about more and less. So far we have thought about which group has more objects in it (for example, 4 tigers and 6 elephants... there are less tigers than elephants). Then we really challenged ourselves by trying to calculate what one more or less than a number was. We even began thinking about what is one more than 1563!

Our highlight of this week has been our NSPCC Sponsored event. For this we chose to walk around the playground as many times as possible. We managed to walk around not just once, not even twice... but 15 times! We were all very proud of ourselves. here are some pictures of our sponsored walk.

We have all had a great week this week at school and we are really looking forward to next week when we can learn and explore more about Elmer and maybe even look at some other adventures.

Last Week in Reception

Last week in Reception we finished our work on the book 'Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs go to School'. We retold the story in our own words using the pictures to help us (pictures in books are also called illustrations) and then we changed some of the words so that the story was a little bit different. We then acted out these stories to the rest of the class. Some of our titles included:

"Bella and the bunch of buttercups go to Brighton";

"Charlie and the rocket go to space".

In Numeracy we learnt how to order numbers: some of us learnt this using numbers 1-5, some of us worked with the numbers 1-10 and some of us even ordered numbers up to 25!

We also began our daily phonics sessions and so far we have learnt the sounds that 's', 'a', 't' and 'p' make. We know that snake begins with 's', Asda begins with 'a', tennis begins with a 't' and a 'p' word is pink!

We are looking forward to next week when we begin to look at the story of 'Elmer' and we also explore the idea of more and less than a group of objects or a number.

Welcome to everyone in Reception!

Last week we had lots of fun at school. Take a look and see for yourself.

Our book that we are looking at in Communication, Language and Literacy at the moment is 'Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs go to School'. We have really enjoyed reading and retelling the story and have noticed some similarities between Harry's first day at school and our first day's at school. We were also excited because next week at school the rest of our friends will be joining us in our classes.We've really enjoyed our first week at school, but we were all ready for lots of rest over the weekend!

Today Reception 2 had a P.E. lesson outside. We decided to take some pictures and videos of our lesson to show you how fast we are!

Our trip to Discover.

Yesterday we went on a school trip. We went to Discover, in Stratford, on a coach. There were lovely things for us to do there and we worked with Alice and Holly, the Story Builders. They were ever so nice. Everyone enjoyed it very much.

When we first got to Discover, we were a bit early so they let us play in their Story Garden.

Then we went inside, met Holly and Alice and were told all about Hootah, the baby space alien. His planet, Squi needs stories so we made one up for him. In our story there was a caveman who walked for 109 years through the jungle before he found a friendly hot dog man and bought a roll with 144 hot dogs in it! Holly said it was the most surreal story she had ever made up with children at Discover.

After this we made our own spoon puppets of the characters from our story. We all had a spoon and there were lots of resources for us to decorate the spoon with.

"Thank you Holly and Alice." said Ben.

"Thank you for that place and all the things there." said Simon.

Everybody enjoyed it (even all the grown ups!) and said "Please may we come back again?"

Wednesday 18th March 2009
Today the Reception classes had visit from Terry of Redbridge Drama Centre. He brought with him a letter from King Cole! King Cole wanted us to mend Humpty Dumpty. In order to do this we had to find the rocket and go into space. Then we found a dragon and he took us to story land on his back! When we finally met King Cole he gave us the pieces of Humpty Dumpty and we put him together again. We all had a great time!

Making Jam Sandwiches

Last week in school, we made jam sandwiches. They were really yummy! We wrote instructions for making them and tried to make them as clear as possible. Here are our instructions for making jam sandwiches:

1. Wash your hands.

2. Get two slices of bread.

3. Spread some butter on the bread with a knife.

4. Get some jam and spread it on one slice of bread.

5. Put the other slice on top.

6. Cut the sandwich up using a knife.

7. Eat it!

We had loads of fun making our sandwiches and eating them. Miss Woodger and Mrs. Castle really enjoyed them too!

FIRE!!

This afternoon in school something very scary happened. We were playing and some of us were learning about addition when suddenly the school was full of the noise of the fire alarm!

Our teacher said "you are the best class ever at lining up." We went outside into the juniors playground and lined up very sensibly. As we went outside we smelt SMOKE!

Miss Woodger took the register and then Mrs Andrew said it was safe to go back into school. We went to the hall and Mrs Henderson told us what had happened. She said " Don't worry, calm down everythings ok, the builders were fixing the gate and accidentally set a bush on fire."

We heard the fire engine coming from the fire station. Thankfully our school is not on fire or burnt.

Happy New Year!

This week at school we have been having lots of fun after the Christmas holidays. In Literacy we have been reading the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. We looked at all of the food that the caterpillar ate and considered whether or not these were healthy foods. This also links with our topic this term, which is all about food. Then we had a circle time with Ben the Bear where we talked about food that we do and do not like.

The cold weather this week has allowed us to experience snow and ice. We had great fun playing with the snow! We learnt what happens when ice melts and when water freezes. We also learnt how to make ice which melts safe for us to drink.

During our Numeracy lessons this week, we have been learning about the days of the week. We have learnt how to recognise which day is which when reading them and also the correct order of the days. We have learnt a song to help us remember this order. It is sung to the tune of “Oh My Darling Clementine”.

In Numeracy this week we are learning about money. We have looked at 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins. We use money to pay for things in shops and when you want to go somewhere. Money is very useful.

In Literacy and our Knowledge and Understanding/PSE work we have been looking at the Christmas story. This is also called the Nativity story. This story is about Joseph, Mary, Jesus, three wise men, the angel Gabriel and some shepherds. In this story Jesus is born in a stable and placed in a manger.

On Thursday and Friday this week we have our Christmas play, 'The Little Red Robin'. We are all very excited about it and think it's going to be brilliant! We will write more about it on Friday.

The Gingerbread Man 24th November 2008

Today the Reception and Nursery children had a visit from Aesop's Touring Theatre Company. They performed The Gingerbread Man. It was fantastic and everyone really enjoyed the show.

This week we have been looking at the story of 'The Gingerbread Man'. We have designed our own gingerbread men and made our own jointed men too.

In Numeracy we have been ordering numbers and checking that they are in the right order.

We have also been making things for the school Christmas Fair.

Today we had P.E. We played the traffic light game, the bean game and we practised throwing and catching beanbags. It was fun!

This week at school we have been learning about shapes such as cones, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cubes and pyramids. These are called 3-D shapes. Here is a picture of us exploring some shapes.

Remembrance Day was on Tuesday. Some of us wore poppies and at 11 o'clock we were silent for one minute to remember all of the soldiers who have died in the wars. Here are some of us making poppy paintings using our fingers. It was a bit messy!

This week at school we have been learning about Divali and Bonfire Night.
We have been making diva lamps and drawing lots of fireworks pictures. We have also used the ICT suite to make fireworks pictures on the computers.
